Organizational Description
Established in 1972, the Copper Country Suzuki Association is a thriving non-profit community music program emphasizing the Suzuki method of instruction. The Visual and Performing Arts Department at Michigan Tech provides private music lessons to students in sound degrees and in the general music curriculum. The Keweenaw Symphony Orchestra is a regional college-community orchestra composed of Michigan Tech students and community members from the central/western Upper Peninsula.
CCSA Duties
Teach beginning through advanced students in violin and viola private lessons and group classes. Conduct the Keweenaw Youth Symphony Orchestra (KYSO) Prep Orchestra and co-conduct the KYSO. Participate in performances, recitals and community events. (50% of appointment)
Michigan Tech Duties
The successful candidate will serve as concertmaster of the Keweenaw Symphony Orchestra and private violin and viola instructor at Michigan Technological University. (50% of appointment)
Requirements
Minimum of a Master’s Degree in Music or a Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum of two years teaching experience. SAA training through book 2 minimum, book 4 preferred with willingness to obtain additional training. Candidate should be a professional-level violinist.
Location
Houghton is on the scenic Keweenaw Peninsula of Lake Superior. Residents enjoy miles of cross-country ski trails, snowshoeing, kayaking and camping. Houghton is home to Michigan Technological University and Finlandia University, the Isle Royale National Park Headquarters, the Keweenaw Symphony Orchestra and the Pine Mountain Music Festival. The CCSA brings musical arts to the Keweenaw Peninsula in collaboration with Michigan Technological University, which hosts the 1000-seat Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts.
Salary
Full time, 9-month with full benefits thought Michigan Tech. 2019-20 contract begins on September 1, 2019 and runs through May 29, 2020. There is an option to teach
summer lessons for the CCSA at an hourly rate.
